Climbing the Active Pucón Volcano

Upon arriving in Pucón, Chile, a small town near the base of the Andes Mountain range, famous mainly for its active volcano that lights up the night sky. This is a tourist destination because you are allowed to climb the volcano and look down into the bubbling lava from the top, although climbs only happen on clear sky days. When we arrived, it was anything but.

Raining and overcast, we booked into a hotel and waited. During the days that we waited, rather than staying still, we hired bicycles and went for a ride through the countryside, and then hiked in a forest close along the Argentina-Chile border to see some rare Monkey Trees and other interesting flora.

Finally on New Years Eve the weather cleared enough and we got a call at 4am that the hike was on. Before sunset we were already equipped and on the mountain, and as early as we were, there were other teams ahead of us. By the time we reached the top the clouds were starting to build up, and when we finally returned to the bottom news was that some teams had not been able to reach the top for the clouds that had formed.

With the elation of completing such a special climb, we stayed in Pucón to celebrate the new year before continuing our journey onward to Bariloche the next day.

Trekking Patagonias

Well, we arrived today in Bariloche. This place is beautiful. The city is situated right next to a large lake on a reasonable slope, with incredible views from almost anywhere. In the distance are the snow-capped mountains and peaks of the Andes range. A perfect place to stop for the next week.

trekkingSo what will we be doing here in this amazing place? Trekking through those amazing peaks and mountain ranges that we can see for three or four days. The path that we have chosen to trek is one of the most difficult and least frequently trekked paths in this area. The track is hard to follow and climbs over the top of a number of mountain ranges on the way, often over ice and snow. To me it sounds perfect.

Now we won’t be doing all of this alone either. We have hired the services of a guide who will take us along this path, teaching us about the environment that we are in as we go. He only speaks Spanish so our Spanish skills should improve over this time too.

Therefore, if you do not hear from me in the next wee while, you will be able to say, “Oh, Rob’s up in the mountains of the Andes, trekking through the Patagonias for a while.” Sounds good doesn’t it? Don’t you wish you were here too? Oh well. Next time.

Travelling Through Chile

After getting to Mendoza, we crossed over the Andes through one of the most amazing passes with incredible switchbacks down a steep drop until reaching Santiago, the capital of Chile. This is a dry city, but interesting to explore.

From here it was off to explore the favourite vacation spot of the city dwellers, Viña del Mar together with it’s sister beach-city Valparaiso. The water was freezing and the sea fierce, but some still braved the waters, although most lay on the beaches soaking up the sun.

Upon our return to Santiago, we took the next bus south, stopping to see Concepción which most people had told us would be a great place to see. We were not as impressed.

Travelling Through Argentina

The first part of our adventure trip. From hiring a car and travelling through to Cafayate, capital of quality wineries, to the gorges and rock formations of a dry valley, and back to Salta, with a leaking fuel tank along the way. Then it was off to San Lorenzo for some lovely green trees amongst a gentle brook, and finally we arrive at Mendoza, next to the border crossing with Chile, to enjoy a beautiful city and its delights.

I’ve graduated – Can you believe it!

Well I’ve finally made it. I graduated and have finished my course.

Reflecting on what I went through during the last five months, there were times that I thought I would not make it. Moments during the course when it was all too much, or my feelings would rise up and cause me to think it would be easier to continue on without this training.

But it has been valuable training, and I am not one to give up on any commitment that I make. So I stuck with it. It wasn’t easy either. Sometimes our cultures clashed, and sometimes our understandings were not the same. At times I could not understand the methods used, but I know that in the end it was all worth it. I changed. Well, at least some things have really changed.

I have decided…

Well, now it comes down to crunch time with decisions.

I have finished the course and am ready to move on. But to where? What should I do next? There are not a great deal of options right now, but these are some of them:

  • Stay at the YWAM base here in Corrientes and work
  • Work in another YWAM base somewhere else in South America
  • Find a church needing help and start working with them
  • Go back to Entre Rios in Bolivia and work with the guys there
  • Return to Buenos Aires and work with the organisation there
  • Return to one of the churches in Jujuy and help them out
  • Search out the poor and do something on my own initiative

Climbing Volcanoes

puconvolcanoWell today, after waiting through three days of cloud and rain, I climbed a volcano. Not just any volcano either. It is said to be the most active volcano in all of the Americas. Judging by the toxic lava exploding out of the mouth of it as we were standing there, I would say they are right too.

As I am in a rush now to celebrate New Year, you will get more of a story and the photos are here.

A Wild Adventure Holiday

Today is the first day of our holidays. Adventure holidays. We have a lot planned for this time, Chris and I. And there is very little time to do it all too, but we will squeeze it all in.

Mountain biking, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, hangliding, rockclimbing, trekking through the Andes mountains, surfing, and diving are all on our agenda. It is a series of about four weeks that we have lined up and should be a lot of fun.

So what is the plan?

New Phone

During my travels, I spent some time in Concepcion, Chile. Now nobody told me that there was nothing to do in Concepcion until we got to Chile.T637.jpg Then everybody told us that there was nothing there. So what did we do? We went there anyway. And you know what? Everybody was right. There is nothing to do there.

Well, almost nothing. It took me two hours to see all of the sights of the city, and then I headed off to the shops. After all, if you are in a big city, what is there better to do than to go shopping. As a guy, my shopping was electronics. And the prices here are a lot better than good old Argentina.

So in all of my shopping, I found myself a phone. A pretty funky phone actually. It is a SonyEricsson T637 with an integrated camera, so now I can take photos and send them to all of my friends.

Check out some of my first photos:
