The Trip - Singapore
Arriving at Singapore
While still in Australia I contacted my friends in Singapore and planned for them to pick both Craig and me up. That was when Craig and I were arriving around the same time. 12hrs before leaving I get an email from Craig telling me that he arrives many hours earlier. That created a problem I needed to resolve before arriving. I didn't.
On arriving in Singapore, I spent half an hour searching for an email from Craig or Martin in response to my desperate emails. Nothing. Realising I was on my own, I headed out through customs. Approaching the glass exit door, I suddenly saw a familiar face. It was Martin. They were all here to pick me up. My email search just made me late. Doh!
Impressions of Singapore
Singapore is a very livable city. There is a tremendous amount of greenery around the place and although it is busy and built up, the whole system is also very efficient too. They use electronic cards in cars so that most gates and carparks can detect your car, deduct any amount owing, and allow you in or out.
The people were really friendly and we were able to chat with most of them and only in the tourist places were we accosted. Everyone speaks fluent English, although sometimes the Chinese accent makes it very hard to understand. Martin said that people understand him more if he speaks with the same accent.
I went for a shopping trip to buy some electronics and a bag. I am now the proud owner of a classy sling-bag which, with Martin's bargaining expertise, we managed to almost halve in price. It seems the Indian shop owners like to bargain - and don't like to lose.
Day 1 - First Night
The first night we went to the zoo where we saw the Creatures of the Night and went on a Night Safari. Both were very interesting and exciting. Most of all though, it was good to be with my friends again.
Day 2 - Next Day
The next day saw us visiting Little India and the Sentosa Musical Fountain in the afternoon. We also went in one of the highest buildings for a view over all of Singapore. This was really amazing.
Our morning involved getting Craig and Ian to the airport as late as possible. Craig wanted to go shopping first you see. They reached their plane by 12:32pm, with it departing at 12:40pm. With only 25mins from the front door to be processed, it was very close.
In the late evening we headed into Orchard Road to photograph Christmas lights. Both Martin's and my shutter happy fingers had worn out our camera batteries so disappointingly, we only got a few shots. We returned to Martin's place to charge our batteries and then went out again, discovering that at 1am in the morning all of the Christmas lights are turned off.
Day 3 - Departure Day
Rising late, Martin came over to my place to pick me up. Mr and Mrs Lee, my hosts and Daphne's parents, were there so we sat down together for a drink and chat. During this time I was able to share of how God has called me to Argentina and the events that are going to take place once I am there. I also shared about the lives of some other amazing people including Watchman Nee and Lester Sumrall.
With only a little time before lunch, Martin and I stopped in for a quick look at China Town. Lunch was at Daphne's cousin's restaurant, called Shanghai. We ate in the Vietnamese section and had so much food that I struggled to fit it all in. It was extremely nice though, which is probably the reason I did fit it in.
After lunch we took Daphne back to work and had a quick look around her office, then headed over to FEVER 100, a missions initiative that Martin is involved in. The speaker was fantastic and his material even better. It was exciting to see so many young people eager to follow God.
A quick stop at Martin's office in his church, and a quick shop at the local shopping center and it was off to the airport. I said farewell to Ben by phone and Martin and I had a coffee and chat before boarding the plane.
Only one problem remained now. I had no accomodation in Hong Kong at all. It was something that I had neglected to book, and I just found out it is peak season too. Gulp!
